East African Street Food Around Town

With the success of Baobab Fare the restaurant, the brand empire expanded! Waka – meaning "blaze" or "shine bright" in Swahili – became the next significant endeavor for the growth of Baobab Fare.

Waka brings food affordability and accessibility to the streets of Detroit, and Mamba's goal was to create a concept of small plates, rich in the history of his upbringing, and inspired by his roots of eating street food in Burundi.

We love that Waka not only illuminates the culinary landscape of Detroit but also pays homage to Mamba's heritage through a delicious journey of food on the go.

Ingredients Matter

The visual identity for Waka was inspired by the food itself. Each carefully selected ingredient captures the essence of East Africa, giving us a joyful palette to play with.

Waka for Everyone

For this lively yellow truck, the sky is the limit! A restaurant on wheels propelled this brand to reach a vast and delightfully diverse community across the city. Waka quickly expanded to serve its delicious food regularly at Detroit City Football Club, the DIA, Eastern Market, Little Caesars Arena, and an ongoing array of pop-ups and catering events throughout Detroit.
